The snow started late last night and so far has dumped a good two feet of the white stuff on us. Strong winds but we’ve had stronger. And it’s still snowing. A very brave junko was at the bird feeder this morning. Later a mourning dove and a couple of house finches joined him. We normally have a good 50 birds at the feeders each morning – junkos, blue jays, evening grosbeaks, house finches, goldfinches, chickadees, mourning doves at this time of year. I went out and shoveled off the porch so I could reach the feeders and take care of these wee brave souls that wandered out today. I did see a couple of blue jays in the early afternoon.
Our road has been plowed once which means there is only maybe a foot of snow on it now and our own laneway is covered by a good two feet of the white stuff. We’ll have it plowed tomorrow once the snow actually stops coming down.
The best part is that we didn’t lose power so we have had heat all day and running water and phone and internet and lights – all those good things that come to us through electricity! We heat with wood but the wood furnace needs the electric fan system to spread the heat throughout the house. All in all, we are well and hibernating.

I’m glad you fared well. Without any warning we got 5 inches here on Thursday night.

too much snow everywhere. It’s snowing here again!

We’re three days post-storm and still hibernating. Schools are closed tomorrow again. I think it’s going to take a while to shake this one off. (Truth be told, though, I’m really enjoying the down time…)

it’s like an unexpected gift in a way, eh?

I wonder where the other birds were…the ones who didn’t come to the feeder? Brrrrrr….. outside. Toasty warm inside? : )

most, I think, shelter in the tall pine trees beside the river. The pheasants hunker down in the brush.

Stay warm Joss,
be good to yourself

Glad you’re okay! That was one heck of a storm!

I have the utmost respect for the brave little birdie souls! I also make sure they have extra love and very cold or snowy days.
I hope you are enjoying your hibernation! <3

Yes, we are all up to it in snow, aren’t we?> As you we don’t have a power shortage and it’s cozy in the house. Chin up.

Thanks for the report. I was wondering how Nemo (That’s what the US weather channel is calling the storm) was treating you. Brave bird indeed!

Good to know you all ok Joss. We saw it on tv how bad some parts of the USA have had snow storms. Glad you got heat and power.
Loved the photo
Stay snug and safe.
Hugs Sue x

We often inherit your weather from across the Atlantic two weeks later. This time I’m prepared, as I’ve bought some snow boots. I always worry about the birds, especially with later snow, because of them nesting. We have a wonderful pair of bullfinches just taken up residence in our garden, as well as numerous blue tits.

Great to know you and your feathered friends are doing well in this wild winter weather. (Hope your “morning after” is as gorgeous as ours was up here: )

Ahh…good that you didn’t lose power! That’s the worst! We were without water, but not for long. Don’t know how much we got here, and it hasn’t left us yet.
I think I’ve seen ONE gull all day
A nice day of hibernation..

With weather like that hibernating is good!

So glad you are coming through the blizzard with the powah! intact —
It makes all the difference, doesn’t it?
Outside of a touch of cabin fever, it’s okay.
Be well, both of you!
Feb 09, 2013 @ 20:54:31
huge difference. So glad to have power through this, heat, internet, lights. It’s all good.
Feb 09, 2013 @ 19:38:54
Sounds like hibernating is the best thing right now!
